SCC Report on Summer Course on European Data Protection Law

From 11th to 15th of September 2017 Irina Ristić, Judicial Advisor and Jasminka Burić, Secretary of Civil Department from The Supreme Court of Cassation of Serbia, attended Training on European Data Protection Law, organized by Academy of European Law (ERA) in its centre in Trier, Germany, through lectures, workshops, presentations and case studies of the prominent experts in data protection field.

The purpose of the Training was the acknowledgement with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as a key document regarding European Data Protection Law and safeguarded by ECJ (European Court of Justice). Main topics were:
  • personal (extra-) territorial and material scope,
  • protection of citizens’ digital rights in practice and respective legal remedies,
  • the role of Data Protection Officers and new European Data Protection Board,
  • EU toolkit for international data transfers,
  • e- Privacy Regulation,
  • Public Governance and Data Protection in EU legislation and judicial control by CJEU & national courts,
  • big data analytics,
  • modernization of Convention 108 for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data and key jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights.
This course was very useful for the participants from Serbia in the context of the ongoing accession of Republic of Serbia towards EU, in view of the fact that GDPR application shall become directly effective as of May 25, 2018, in all member states.
