First time in Court or at Courthouse

A guide “First time in Court or at Courthouse” offers practical information on the basic features of law and procedure in a lay format for potential court users to empower them to resolve their disputes in the court. The MDTF JSS Serbian Judicial Functional Review highlights how affordability is the biggest barrier to access to justice.

The MDTF JSS team partnered with Lawyer’s Committee for Human Rights (YUCOM) to increase legal literacy and understanding of functioning of the justice system of those who cannot afford lawyers. The Guide was prepared in order to increase access to justice for ordinary citizens and small business.

The Guide is available in Serbian and English and Serbia’s other minority languages – Albanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Romanian.

The Guide will be disseminated to all courts in Serbia. Also the MDTF in cooperation with YUCOM will promote the Guide among NGOs that provide legal support, municipal legal aid departments and other legal aid organizations.
